Daring Greatly with Dynadot

This blog is a special one because we are celebrating Dynadot’s 20th Anniversary! To commemorate this momentous occasion, we have an insightful and exclusive interview with the man who envisioned and built Dynadot, Todd Han.

Today, Dynadot is not just a leading domain registrar but also a promising and successful global tech company. Join us in embarking on a new milestone and heading upward and onward

In conversation with the man himself, Todd Han:

Q1. Why did you start Dynadot? Tell us the story

Todd - I have loved computers since I was a young boy. I wrote my first small program in the Basic language in elementary school. I was in my mid-twenties when the internet took off. My mother, who owns a vacation house in Mexico, asked me to build a website for her house. I jumped in and learned about html and domain names.

I really disliked the control panel of the registrar I used to register her domain name. I thought I could easily create my own registrar with my programming skills. Being young and naive, I jumped right in and started a domain name registrar. My goal at the time was to gain 1 million domain names, automate everything, and retire. (We are now at almost 5 million domains, and I am as busy as ever).

Q2. Over the last 20 years, you’ve helmed one of the most successful domain and internet businesses. What lessons did you learn along the way and what’s different about dynadot?

Todd - Dynadot focuses first and foremost on making our customers happy. We strive to offer the lowest prices, the most powerful control panel, and the best customer service. We are privately owned, and therefore can focus on building a long term company for our customers and our team.

Q3. Dynadot turns 20! What are your future plans for the company?

Todd - I still remember jumping up and down in my study when the first order came in. It was just me at the beginning, and I programmed the website, did customer service, and kept the books. Back then domains cost $7.99 a year ($6.99 bulk pricing).

I am thrilled that Dynadot is now a top 10 registrar in the world. Dozens of our competitors have since been acquired or gone out of business. How did we do it? We kept our heads down and worked hard to build the systems and the team that our customers love. Our next goal is to become a top 5 registrar in the world, and we should be there in a couple years.

Q4. Over the last 2 decades, what trends have you observed that have stood the test of time in the domain industry and what trends do you foresee for the future?

Todd - Domains remain the hub of digital identity. Social media, apps, and search engines have their place. But having a good domain name remains the foundation of discoverability on the internet.

Q5. How did you come up with the name Dynadot? Is there any reference/story to that?

Todd - It is just short for Dynamic Dot, where dot is shorthand for website

Q6. What advice would you give to new people joining the domain and internet industry?

Todd - Be kind and build something beautiful.

Q7. How do you feel achieving this milestone of 20 years? How do you plan to celebrate and cherish this?

Todd - It has been an amazing journey. I still remember attending our first ICANN meeting maybe 15 years ago. Someone from a large registrar asked me how many domains we had. I said we had 60k in our system. He was surprised we could even run a business with so few domains. Now that company is long gone, and we are still here.

I feel amazed at what our determined and talented team has accomplished. I feel honored that our customers entrust us with their valuable domain assets. And I feel hopeful as to what Dynadot will become in the future.

I plan to celebrate by doing some tango dancing, my favorite hobby.

I recently switched to Dynadot, and I have no clue what took me so long, but I'm now a convert.
