6 Ways to Use .Wiki Domains

Bring Collaborators Together and Share Knowledge

When you hear the word “wiki,” you probably think of Wikipedia.org. It’s one of the top ten most-visited websites on the planet, and over 6 billion people visit it every month to look up information. This gives the term “wiki” an association with knowledge and authority, and indeed, wiki software is a fantastic way to collaborate, share, and document lots of information online in an accessible, organized way.

Of course, Wikipedia isn’t the only wiki, and what a lot of people don’t know is that “wiki” actually refers to the software being used to organize the information in question. The ethos of a wiki is that it's open and editable and transparent. It’s an invitation for people with similar interests to come together and harness their collaborative energy to build an accurate portal for accessing knowledge and information.

The .wiki domain extension doesn't require the site to use wiki software, but it's still a recognizable way to bring people together on a given topic or specialty. Regardless of what kind of information is presented, a .wiki site is a powerful way to organize contributions from many collaborators or identify your site with factual resources and learning. Here are some examples of when and how a .wiki site can really make an impact.

After you’ve been thoroughly inspired, you can register .wiki for just $5.99!

Fandom

Fans unite! If there’s one thing the internet has taught us, it’s that people can and will get obsessed with one special thing. No matter how obscure, if there’s a fandom community of any size, there’s probably a wiki about it somewhere online.

There are thousands of sites out there detailing information about Star Trek, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Marvel Cinematic Universe, DC Cinematic Universe…pretty much any kind of sci-fi/fantasy entertainment series probably has a wiki about it where their fans can come together and catalog their knowledge.

But just to drive home the idea that a .wiki can be about anything, here’s the .wiki for fans of Mountain Dew: https://dew.wiki/. Mountain Dew’s dedicated fanbase came together to write 386 articles about the much-derided soft drink. This .wiki redirects to a fandom page, which is a popular and memorable way to give your project a more memorable name.

Gaming

Just as fandoms of movies, tv shows, books, and comics create wikis, the world of video games is full of intensely cataloged wikis. Particularly for massively-multiplayer online games, these wikis help established players and noobs alike learn everything there is to know about the in-game universe.

Runescape.wiki boasts “we've become the largest and most comprehensive reference for the game, with 61,532 articles and counting.” That kind of activity means a game can become so much more for the community documenting and sharing about it.

Tech

Self-help knowledge bases are essentially wikis, and when you’re working collaboratively on or with a product, there's a lot of knowledge to keep track of. GitHub has an extensively organized wiki: https://github.wiki/en

Internet privacy is a serious matter, especially as governments and social media companies alike continue to push the limits of legality as they conduct surveillance on ordinary people. Privacy.wiki provides a centralized database of privacy laws around the world. Keep your identity and information safe and secure, people!

Education/Academia/Research/Information

Academia and research institutions use wikis to organize vast amounts of information.

https://fatcat.wiki/ - The name "Fatcat" can be interpreted as short for "large catalog", as the service aspires to be a complete catalog of the digital scholarly record.

https://www.enviro.wiki/  - The goal of ENVIRO.wiki is to make scientific and engineering research results more accessible to environmental professionals, facilitating the permitting, design and implementation of environmental projects. Articles are written and edited by invited experts (see Contributors) to summarize current knowledge for the target audience on an array of topics, with cross-linked references to reports and technical literature.

Community Support and Activism

For marginalized communities, taking control of their own history and sharing hard-to-come-by information with others in the community is very important.

For example, non-binary people don't have sufficient representation in media for young non-binary people to see themselves reflected in media. So non-binary people take things into their own hands, collecting and sharing information about non-binary identities and putting it online so that everyone can benefit: https://nonbinary.wiki/

The .wiki domain and wikis more generally are as vibrant and diverse as the communities that use them. Use .wiki to add eye-catching credibility to your next project. Register now as part of our sale for just $5.99! Offer ends 6/30/22 23:59 UTC.

The price seems all over the place, how is renewal price different for each domain? I can't think of any other tld that does this. One renewal is $20-30 and the other is over a $100. That would never work for me.
