The Domain Transfer Process:<br/>Transferring Your Domain Away
While we will be sad to see you go, we understand that sometimes our customers choose to transfer their domains to another registrar. Here at Dynadot, even if you are leaving us, we still want to make the process as smooth as possible for you. Here is a quick breakdown of what you need before you initiate a domain transfer (in or out):
- 60+ day old domain registration or transfer
- Domain whose expiration date is more than 2-3 weeks away
- Unlocked domain
- Correct email address listed in the Whois directory
- Domain authorization code
Per ICANN, domains registered or transferred within 60 days cannot be transferred. You can use this date calculator to figure out when your domain will be available for transfer. At the other end of the spectrum, having your domain expire during transfer can sometimes cause problems. We recommend leaving at least 2-3 weeks until your expiration date when you submit a domain transfer. If your domain is already expired, it may be possible to transfer, but you'll need to contact us so you can get to your authorization code. See our help file on transferring an expired domain for more information.
To unlock your domain(s) for transfer, log into your Dynadot account, check off the domain(s) you want to transfer and click "Set Lock." If you haven't already, you will be prompted to unlock your account. Once your account is unlocked, click "Unlock Domains" and it will return you to the main page where you'll see the lock under the "Settings" column is no longer highlighted next to the domain(s) you checked off.
Click on the domain and it will take you to an informational page; scroll down to see your authorization code. Once you have the auth code, you will need to keep your domain unlocked during the transfer process, but we recommend re-locking your account, which you can do by going to "My Info" and "Account Lock." Now you're ready to start your transfer order.
After you complete the order, you will receive a transfer authorization email to the email address in your Whois. If you have privacy with us, the email will go to us and we will forward it to the email in your Dynadot account. You need to respond to this email within a certain time period (usually around 10 days). The transfer process will not start until you respond to this authorization email. The process can take anywhere from 5-15 days after your response.
