Why can't I set a domain record to redirect to an IP/subfolder ?

for example I want http://website.com/ to go to http://123.123.123.123/subfolder

A records only go to IP addresses.  Once you add /subfolder, it is no longer an IP address.

The only way you'd be able to forward to that URL is by using either Dynadot Forwarding or Stealth Forwarding.

Usually on your host, you can set up sub-domains that refer to a subfolder, that include subdomains, such as <name>.<domainname>.com

If you do this,you can set up a CNAME record that points to the site as shown in thist post:
