Average time for webpages to update?

I was wondering how long on average does it take for pages to update on tghe web after uploading with ftp? I have noticed sometimes its instant, and sometimes it takes a while. I have a site with another host and its instant every time. Maybe Im doing something wrong??

As soon as your page is uploaded by FTP, it is available and online.

If you don't see the latest update, try hitting the refresh button on your web browser.

OK, I was doing something wrong. My FTP setting was uploading them to the wrong folder. Thanks so much for the help....
